| My almost two year old German Shepherd is fixated on chasing his tail. When he was a puppy, 8 months old, he bit it. So he chased it trying to lick it and kept breaking the scab open on walls and with his tongue. After many many months, and with help from the vet with spray on band-aid and a cone, it healed. Now over a year later, he is still fixated on it and whenever we stop paying the least bit of attention to him he chases it. He is very intelligent and knows many tricks that make him think, like hide and seek with his toys and it really wears him out. His tail chasing is annoying and seems to torment him(and us). Is there anything we can do to get him to stop? |

My best advice is to redirect him, teach him a solid and quick down stay. Finally, I would look at his diet, make sure there are no corn ingredients or by products, wheat or soy. Those are common allergens and could cause him to be itchy - thus the tail chasing / chewing.
