We have had our 4 year old Akita/Lab since he was 4 months old. He was totally housebroken until a few weeks ago. Please bear with me as I explain. Due to a death in the family, we had to board our Kane for about a week. When we returned we noticed he was urinating in his crate. We chalked it up to him needing to get used to our way of life again. This behavior went on for about a week. Our home is on the market and we cannot afford this type of "accident" so we moved the crate to the basement (no rug), and thoroughly cleaned his area. Because my son had a dog downstairs (Kane does not get along with other dogs so we kept them seperated - other dog no longer there) the other dogs scent is there causing Kane to MARK everywhere we put the crate. We've tried doggie diapers, when I worked from home I took him outside every two hours - and STILL he urinates in the crate. It started out with him urinating outside the crate while he is in it. But last night we had to remove the bottom part of the crate to clean it and he ended up laying in urination this morning. We just had him groomed and have to do it again, and we are afraid that we will have potential home buyers come through, but his mess will run them off. Please help. I have emailed a behaviorist and am awiting his reply. We took him to a vet who ruled out diabetes, urinary tract and bladder infection.

Thanks so much for any advice you can provide.

After three vet visits and countless tests and xrays, i found out that my 4 year old baby is really closer to 6 and may be suffering from incontinence. He is on meds for that and it seems to be working. It amazes me that my original vet could not tell our baby was a tad older than the shelter we got him from thought. Although I understand it is difficult sometimes to guess a dogs age. Anyway, we pray he is feeling better now that he has a bit of meds in his system and no longer have to worry about "accidents".

I'm glad to hear that. Its quite hard to diagnose incontinence, but often times, owners think its submissive urination or even house training problems. Keep us posted!
