I adopted my beagle Snickers a few years ago. When I got her she was about a year old, she was house trained and she's an all around great dog. She has behaved well since the day I got her. I moved up to Virginia with her about a year after I got her, and I've been here for almost 2 years. When I first lived here we lived out in the country and so when she wanted to go out I'd just let her run around. Well we've been living near a busy road for a few months now so I've had to keep her on a chain when I take her out. She was doing PERFECT..for a while. My uncle lived with me and brought in a puppy that used the bathroom on the floor a few times, but then became an outside dog. Snickers never ONCE used the bathroom while the puppy was living here. Well the puppy has been gone for a few weeks now and Snicker's behavior has gone downhill. We take her out more than enough times a day, she gets attention, she gets fed and has water 24/7. She has been pooping and urining in our hallway(at my mom's door mostly) for a couple of weeks now. We kept her out for 2 hours the other night and the first thing she did was run down the hall and pee. She's also been getting into the garbage, she has never done this before. I came home tonight and there was trash from one end of the house to the other. I tell her no firmly and explain what a bad girl she's been, I've even popped her on her bottom a few times, but I don't like to discipline her so harshly. Can anyone explain why she's doing this and what I can do to stop it PLEASE? Sad

Dogs can start showing this behavior for a number of reasons - stress, changes in the house, medical problems, not enough exercise.

My advice would be to first get her checked by a vet for a UTI. Then start watching her - if you can't watch her crate her. Clean up the mess with an appropriate cleaner (look on our recommended products page under house training), reward her with a cookie for going outside.

For the destructive behaviors, make sure she is on a quality dog food - I like wellness personally. Make sure you are exersizing her 20 minutes a day (more than a walk please...) - offer her a stuffed kong as well.

Do not punish her for going in the house or getting in the trash. Just do your best to prevent it and you wont have a problem.
