This is a long one so beware!
I bought a new puppy a few weeks ago from a friend of the family who has her dog (the mother dog) train to potty in a special potty place in the house ( a seperate potty crate(she's where she can't take the dog outside often so she trained it indoors) and I was impressed by how well she was trained and how the pups from her liter were already using the same potty method as their mother before they were sold. So I decided since they are long haired and small dogs that I liked the idea of having a 'trained indoor only' dog and would continue training the puppy just as her mother was trained and set up the area just as she had at her previous home to keep her from being too confused and it went well for a few days but now she's starting to 'hold' her pee or poop until she can run around the house where we end up finding it or catching her in the action of relieving herself in the wrong area. I don't make a big fuss when she messes up and I will re-inforce her as to where she is supposed to be pottying and I make sure to praise her alot when she does do well but now all of a sudden she's just holding it. I have her crate trained and get up with her a couple times a night to potty and I come home for lunch to let her out to potty and even after holding it all this time while crated you would think she would be dying to potty but when I put her in the place to potty she won't go, she'll even lay down like she just doesn't understand. She's crated in our bathroom and is familiar with it and our a-joining bedroom but won't venture to any other part of the house yet but the place she's supposed to potty is in the bathroom where her crate is at and we keep finding accidents in the bedroom and bathroom. I know if I continue to let her roam around the bedroom and bathroom she'll potty there but she fusses when I lock her in the potty crate like she doesn't need to go, I've even watched her go in circles ready to go, placed her in the kennel and she'll stop and fuss to get out! If I let her out she runs to the room and will go there. I tried putting her back into her sleeping crate and 5 or 10 mintues later will take her out and place her back in the potty crate and tell her to go potty and when she refused I'd repeat the procedure again and after about 30 mintues she finally would go but I'm so frustrated not knowing why she's not wanting to go where she's supposed to now?! What have I done wrong? Please give me some suggestions! |
