My aunt just adopted a dog, Duke, from the humane society. I think he may be an akita mix. He is a wonderful dog, very friendly--that is until someone tries to leave. If we are in the house and stand up to leave he starts barking and growling, jumping around in circles and has even tried to bite a couple of times. If we are outside and walking towards our car to leave he will get between the person and the car and bark and growl. We thought it might have something to do with the sound of car keys but he does it even if you don't have any keys with you. We've tried all sorts of actions to solve the problem-no sudden movements, being very careful not to do anything to alarm Duke. But as soon as he thinks you may be leaving....he starts. We don't think that it's seperation anxiety because even if there's several people in the room and only one of them stands up to leave he still does it. If we can't find a solution my aunt will have to return him to the humane society. Hope someone has some ideas. Thanks!! |
