I have a three year old German Shepherd. Very smart, very mellow dog. However she will dig holes in our yard that are three feet deep! She 'works' alot with her nose right to the ground. I think she'd be great as a 'drug dog', bomb dog or cadaver dog. Anyway! We try to exercise her regularly and we live in the country with a huge yard too. Any suggestions as to how to get her to stop doing this? She is getting better I'll have to say. Last year she literally dug up the whole flower bed each time we watered. I would appreciate any help or suggestions anyone may have. Thank you.

Carol Very Happy

Dogs dig for various reasons, boredom, lack of exercise, searching for a critter underground, or even just fun sometimes.

To stop it, you will need to stay with your dog outside. If you notice too much sniffing in one area, call the dog to you and praise the dog for coming.

Another option is to create a dig appropriate area. Even bury fun things for your dog to find. Sandboxes are a fun thing for dogs! and it can even save your new flowers!
