I have a 13 wk old tibetan terrier. My husband and i have been told to crate train him until he is properly potty trained. He's doing alright in the crate at night... but i feel guilty leaving him in the crate during the day when we go to work. it just
seems like a lot of crate time. what do you think about baby gating him in a small room while we're out during the day and keeping him in the crate at night? |

It absolutely isn't cruel. Its actually much safer. Your dog could chew on something, swallow it and then have it get stuck in the intestines. That would be much worse than being in a crate all the time. I understand feeling badly, but try not to. You are doing the safest thing for your puppy.
Here are some options that might make it easier for you.
1. You could try an ex-pen (though this isn't good to do while you are working on house training, having too much room can hinder them holding it.
2. Hire a pet sitter to let your puppy out mid-day and spend some quality loving time.
3. Find a dog day care.
Good luck!

| I think they are Wrong BECAUSE!! A dog Is an animal that lives in a pack!.. A crate is shutting them out of the rest of the pack! (one unhappy dog).. Just totally dog proof one room,(with a stair gate) Incourage to play with lots of toys, (his own). Give him some great big Doggy chew, (better than small ones to choke on).. he will be much happier, because he has space to have a mad five minutes without doing anything wrong!!!.. When you visit the room he is in, he won't feel left out!, (with lots of cuddles fuss, anyway he can get it) eventually taking him in each room, increasing the time for good behaviour (while you're there!) he will roam the house.. until he is so good you won't ever need the stair gate, ever again!!.. ps, Crates create problems, THEY ARE FOR LAZY PEOPLE, WHO DON'T WANT TO BE BOTHER WITH TRAINING, USING COMMON SENCE, ON DOGS SAFTEY (DOG PROOFING FOR PUPS, UNTIL TRUSTED) SUCH A BEAUTIFUL ANIMAL!! MANS BEST FRIEND .. WAS WHAT PEOPLE USED TO KNOW A DOG AS.. Well lots of love and luck.. remember you are his only family, he needs the love and comfort, not jail.. xx |
