Our beloved miniature dachshund, just over a year old, has been exhibiting some possession aggression over the past few months. It started with her protectiveness of a certain flavor of chew toy and gradually expanded to include her food bowl (whether or not there was food in it), all chew toys, and any coveted toy in general. She would growl if anyone approached, even the person bringing small handfuls of food to her bowl (which we allowed her access to only at mealtimes), although she never did anything more than growling. Finally, tonight, she snapped at, and bit, her "mother" on the face, leaving two moderate-sized cuts, sending her to Urgent Care. She then ran away when everyone screamed.
My question is: Is there any hope? For the most part, the family feels that we have to get rid of her, but she's incredibly sweet and tolerant 99% of the time. She never so much as growls at anyone normally and is always ready to cuddle up to someone - even when she's guarding something! I'm not sure she can be redeemed in some of the family's eyes, but is there any hope of reforming her behavior and being able to keep her? |
